FIREFIGHTERS RAISE MONEY FOR MDA
Firefighters from the North Greece Professional Firefighters Local 3827 and Lake Shore Professional Firefighters Local 3981 joined forces for their annual “Fill The Boot” campaign June 11, 2009, to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and “Jerry's Kids.” The career and volunteer staff worked together at the intersection of Long Pond Road and Latta Road in Greece from just before the morning rush-hour to the mid afternoon hours. The firefighters donated their time to accept the donations of passing motorists so that the funds raised at this event could be presented during the Labor Day weekend Jerry Lewis Telethon for MDA. Since 2001, the North Greece and Lake Shore Professional Firefighters have raised more than $87,000 from the unselfish and compassionate motorists passing through the voluntary toll set up.
The firefighters wish to extend their sincere appreciation for the patience and generosity of all that passed through and helped raise over $10,400 for this years “Fill The Boot” campaign. Without these donations, MDA would not be the world's largest non-governmental sponsor of research seeking the causes of and effective treatments for neuromuscular diseases.
We would like to extend our thanks to the area Businesses that helped us out with donations of food, drinks and/or use of their property for this annual event. Please help support Ricci's Family Restaurant, Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, Ricci's Imports, Mobile and ESL like we do.
The money raised in these events for MDA are put to great use, including but not limited to: $25.00 for a flu shot, $500 to assist with repairs to wheelchairs and leg braces, $650 to send one child to MDA Summer Camp, and 77.4% of every dollar goes directly toward research services and education.
The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) has been a sponsor of MDA since 1954 and firefighters are the number one monetary contributor throughout the United States and Canada. With your help every year, hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised in New York State alone. Thank you for your generosity and kindness for our 2009 “Fill The Boot”
In 2004, the North Greece Professional Firefighters created a collage scholarship in the amount of $500 for one high school senior attending classes within the Greece or Hilton School Districts. The candidates are simply asked to write an essay describing their future ambitions and goals. A committee formed from members of our local 3827 chooses a winner each year and presents them a check.
